What makes this recipe great?

We honestly think that this recipe’s great because it walks you through the process of making a donut.

A lot of the time, desserts like this one are tricky to tackle at home because you don’t have the faintest clue where to get started.

This recipe, though, is really pleasantly simple.

We like that it’s really straightforward to cook the donuts in oil in your kitchen – you don’t need any special equipment or ingredients.

Instead, you can just cook for your family!

We want to quickly point out how robust this recipe is, too.

The reason that a lot of people struggle with baking is that baking powder and baking soda can be tricky to work with. They’re confusingly named, and people often get measurements wrong quite easily.

Instead of that tricky system, this recipe uses supermarket yeast, which it’s really tough to mess up. As long as your dough is sitting on the counter in a fairly warm place, your dough will rise!

How could you put your spin on this recipe?

You could put your spin on this recipe by topping the donuts with whatever you’d like!

We like to combine the chocolate filling with a topping that complements that, such as finely chopped hazelnuts.

Then, you’ve got the hazelnut and chocolate flavor of Nutella in a really simple, tasty package.

Alternatively, you can use whatever toppings you’d like – from syrups to freeze-dried berries.

We’d suggest using something with a sharp flavor, like lemon or raspberry, which can be really different from the milk chocolate at the center of the donuts.

Of course, though, the choice is yours!

Ingredients:

Dry Ingredients:

  • 4 cups flour (500 g)
  • 1/4 cup and 1 tbsp sugar (70 g)
  • 1 tbsp instant dry yeast (10 g)

Wet Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp margarine (50 g)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup and 2 tbsp milk (150 ml)
  • 1/4 cup and 3 tbsp water (100 ml)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (3 g)

Chocolate Filling:

  • 9 oz chocolate (250 g)

Directions:

Donuts:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  1. Add the wet ingredients while stirring until you get a dough firm enough to knead with your hands. Don’t worry if the dough sticks to your hands as you start to knead.
  1. To knead use your palms to push the dough down and away from you, then fold it inwards and repeat the process for about 10 minutes until you get a smooth and fluffy dough that no longer sticks to your hands.

If you have a kneading machine, let it knead for 5 to 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and fluffy.

  1. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a big bowl covered with plastic wrap. A cloth or towel works as well. Wait until the dough has doubled or tripled in size (about 2 hours).

Tip: The time this step takes depends on the room temperature where you place the bowl to ferment. The higher the temperature, the less time it will take to double in size.

  1. Try to place it near a source of heat (e.g. radiator) to accelerate the process. In case it doesn’t start to grow within the first 90 minutes you can put it in the oven over 120 F (50 C) and it will start to ferment, but you most likely won’t need it if you follow every step of the recipe.
  1. On a floured board, roll out the dough until it is an inch thick.

  1. Using a glass, (we used on about 3 inches in diameter), you can choose the size you prefer, and start making as many circles as you can. Re-roll repeating the process with the dough in between the circles until you don’t have more dough.
  1. Once you have the shape let them rest for half an hour and they should double in size again, which will then be time to cook.
  1. To fry the donuts heat 2 cups of oil to medium-low heat on a medium pan and fry them for 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  1. Set the donuts aside to cool.

Chocolate Filling:

  1. Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 seconds increments, stirring in between, until chocolate is fully melted.
  1. Poke a hole in the center of the donut with a chopstick and fill in the donuts with a pastry bag.

Wet:

  • - 3 tbsp of margarine (50 g)
  • - 1 egg
  • - cup and 2 tbsp of soy milk (150 ml)
  • - cup and 3 tbsp of water (100 ml)
  • - tsp of salt (3 g)

Filling:

  • - 9 oz of chocolate (250 g)

Instructions

    1. Donuts: Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
    2. Add the wet ingredients while sMrring unMl you get a dough firm enough to knead with your
hands. Don´t worry if the dough sMcks to your hands as you start to knead.
    3. To knead I recommend a kneading machine, as it is easier and takes less Mme. Let it knead for
5 to 10 minutes unMl the dough is smooth and fluffy.
    4. In case you don´t have one, don´t worry. To knead use your palms to push the dough down
and away from you, then fold it inwards and repeat the process for about 10 minutes unMl
you get a smooth and fluffy dough that no longer sMcks to your hands.
    5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a big bowl covered with transparent food film. A
cloth or towel work as well. Wait unMl the dough has doubled or tripled in size (about 2 hours
      or less).
    6. Tip: The Mme this step takes depends on the room temperature where you place the bowl to
ferment. The higher the temperature, less Mme it will take to double in size. I try to place it
near a source of heat (e.g. radiator) to accelerate the process. In case it doesn´t start to grow
within the first 90 minutes you can put it in the oven over 120 F (50 C) and it will start to
ferment, but I am very sure you won´t need it if you follow every step of the recipe.
    7. On a floured board, roll out the dough unMl it is inch thick. I used a glass that is about 3
inches in diameter, you can choose the size you prefer, and start making as many holes as you
can. Re-roll repeaMng the process with the dough in between the holes unMl you don´t have
      more dough.
    8. Once you have the shape let them rest for have an hour and you will see how they double in
size again, it will be Mme to cook them.
    9. To fry the donuts heat 2 cups of oil to medium-low heat on a medium pan and fry them for
1-2 minutes on each side or unMl golden brown. You can do it with 2 donuts at the Mme in the
pan but I would recommend being paMent and not puZng more than one at the same Mme
because they will grow in the pan and they can sMck to each other and fall apart as you try to
      take them out.
    10. Now you already have your donuts and it is Mme to fill them with chocolate. Melt the
chocolate in the microwave. Be very careful with this step. You can´t let it in the microwave for
too long or you will burn the chocolate. Instead of that melt it for 30 seconds, sMr it with a
spoon and and sMr it for another 30 seconds if it isn´t melt enough. Repeat the process unMl it
      is liquid.
    11. Poke a hole with a chopsMck and fill in the donuts with a pastry bag.
    12. How to do it with household items?
    13. Using just tape a plasMc bag and a plasMc straw you will fill in the donuts. In a corner of the
plasMc bag make a hole where you will put a piece of the plasMc straw 1.5 inch large, leaving 1
inch out of the bag. Put the bag and the straw together with a tape and fill the bag with
chocolate. Using a chopsMck or the plasMc straw, poke a hole in the donut and then fill it with
the plasMc straw in the donut pressing the bag with both hands unMl the chocolate starts to
spread out of the donut. Repeat the process with all the donuts.
